It is with sadness that I heard of the death of Peter Brougham Wyly in February 2010 - a genealogist who has studied the Brougham family for many years. Peter dedicated his life to compiling the Brougham Family Trees, many of which are published in the book 'A History of Brougham Hall and High Head Castle' by Mark Thomas available from Brougham Hall. Peter also had his own unpublished work 'A Gathering of Broughams' which brought together most of his research.
Following a visit to Brougham Hall in around 2000, Christopher Terry suggested I make contact with Peter who would be interested in hearing from me. Despite the many hours of research he had not managed to pull together the Huddersfield Brougham's. Peter motivated me to search out my family tree and to try and link the Huddersfield Broughams to the main Brougham trees he had created. Peter was very supportive, provided lots of information and advice, and encouraged me no end. It is through Peter that my interest in family history started.
Peter's lifetime research is to be lodged with the Records Office in Carlisle where it will be made available to all.
My thanks to Peter for his encouragement, and my thoughts are with his wife and two children.
